Our story

Why we exist

Barcelona is one of the most international cities in Europe. On any given day you'll hear Catalan, Spanish and dozens of other languages — and English is often the one that brings everyone together.

But moving here is the easy part. Building a social life from scratch — when your friends and family are back home, your colleagues have their own plans and the locals' friendship groups go back decades — can be surprisingly lonely. And the international crowd is always on the move.

Barcelona English Speakers is here to fix that. We're part of the AmigoUp community, which runs free social events every single week: meetups, dinners, social sports, hikes, quiz nights and beach days. The low-pressure setting makes it easy to talk, and because the same friendly faces keep coming back, conversations quickly turn into friendships.

From there, members keep the momentum going with member events on our members' Linkdful page and chatting in our WhatsApp community. No awkward networking, no pressure — just genuine people looking for the same thing you are.

What we stand for

Our values

Every accent welcome

Native and fluent English speakers from anywhere — anyone 18+. Your accent is part of the fun.

Real connections

We're a social community, not a networking event. Nobody is selling anything — people are here to make friends.

Come as you are

Most people come alone the first time. Shy or outgoing, you'll fit right in — organisers make sure nobody is left out.

Respect, always

Kindness first, zero tolerance for harassment. Our community is moderated so it stays friendly and safe.

Free or low-cost

Joining is free and most events are too. Any cost is always shown clearly on Meetup before you RSVP.

Rooted in Barcelona

We're for people building a life here, not just passing through — so the friendships you make tend to last.

Quick answers

Do I need to be a native English speaker?
No! English is simply the language we all share. Native speakers, fluent speakers and anyone comfortable holding a relaxed conversation in English are all welcome — you'll hear accents from all over the world.
How is Barcelona English Speakers connected to AmigoUp?
Barcelona English Speakers is part of the AmigoUp community. We share the same Meetup group for public events, the same Linkdful page for members, and the same WhatsApp community — so joining one means you're part of both.
Is it free to join?
Yes! Joining is completely free. Most of our events are also free or very low cost. Any event with an entry fee will always be clearly listed on our Meetup.com page before you RSVP.
What's the difference between Meetup and Linkdful events?
Our public events are posted on Meetup.com — anyone can RSVP and come along, no membership needed. Member events live on our private Linkdful page — anything from a padel game to a beach day. Both show up on our events page. Start with a public event, then ask for an invite to join member events.
