You've studied English for years. You understand films, you can read articles β€” but when it's time to speak, the words don't come as fast as you'd like. Sound familiar? The fix isn't another grammar book. It's conversation. Here's how to practise English in Barcelona in real life.

Why conversation beats classes

Classes are good for structure, but fluency comes from speaking β€” often, in relaxed situations, about things you actually care about. The more you speak without pressure, the more natural it becomes. And Barcelona, with its huge international community, is a great place to do it.

1. Join English-speaking social events

This is the most enjoyable way to practise. At our weekly events you'll chat with native speakers from the UK, Ireland, the US, Australia and elsewhere β€” and with other people who speak English as a second language. Nobody is grading you. It's just conversation.

Tip: coffee meetups and walks are easiest for first-timers β€” quieter than a bar, with plenty of time to talk.

2. Do an activity in English

Doing something together takes the pressure off talking. Try:

  • Quiz nights β€” great for vocabulary, and teamwork forces you to speak.
  • Sports β€” padel, running or volleyball with English-speaking groups.
  • Board games β€” lots of natural, repeated phrases.
  • Volunteering β€” many international organisations work in English.

3. Try a language exchange

Swap your Spanish or Catalan for someone's English. You help them, they help you β€” and you often make a friend in the process.

4. Make English part of your day

  • Watch series and films in English with English subtitles.
  • Listen to podcasts on your commute.
  • Think out loud in English β€” describe what you're doing as you cook or walk.
  • Change your phone's language to English.

5. Stop worrying about mistakes

Native speakers make mistakes all the time. People care about what you say, not perfect grammar. At our events, nobody corrects you unless you ask. Confidence comes from practice, not perfection.
